Part Twelve: The Reader

Ohhhhh no, I was wondering whether intercision would come up and now it has and I'm worried about John and Sherlock :( Seems too much to hope for that they won't have to face it.

I do love how you've expanded on the HDM world, making it a viable history of this world. It's fantastic :) I can definitely imagine intercision being used by Nazi scientists in this world, considering the horrific experiments they tried irl.

Not sure what to think about the prophecy, but it is exciting how it's developing! I think what I most like about this chapter is the developing relationship between Sherlock and John: the making out in the car, Amarisa and Raniel flirting and playing pretty much constantly. It's lovely.

Aeliana and Grayson telling Mycroft and Sherlock off for being rude made me grin. Watch your manners, boys :p

Can't wait to see where this goes now, especially now there's an alethiometer in the mix...

Several people seem to agree with you - the idea of Moriarty with an intercision device is indeed very creepy.

And I loved writing that bit in the car. And when the Holmes parents scolded their sons - they might be the world's only consulting detective and THE British government, but Mummy and Father make the rules at home!

I love how John is so sure he's nothing special. Oh John.

I must admit I love writing John as just completely oblivious/in denial of how unique he is.

I love this fic so much. It's definitely my favorite out there right now. You have such wonderful characterizations and the plot is brilliant. Can't wait for more.

I’m siding with Risa and leaning towards ‘batshit’.

Yeah, for sleepy adorable John. He’s cute. He’s harmless looking. He’s got a gun and most likely a combat knife hidden under his jumper somewhere. :)

Can I ask what happens to a Daemon when the connection to their human is severed? Do they die? Or go feral and crazy? I’m curious because I’ve never read the books. I had the impression that neither the human or the daemon survived the link being broken.

It's kind of hard to explain, so I'll let Wikipedia do the talking (while I edit out spoilers and names you won't be able to connect to anything relevant). Comments surrounded by [ ] are made by me.

In the trilogy, a special guillotine [the Maystadt Guillotine] is used by [some evil assholes] to separate people from their dæmon without killing them (intercision). However, unlike the ordeals undergone by witches and human shamans [separation], the guillotine violently and permanently severs the bond between person and dæmon, and drastically reduces the person's creativity, intelligence, and will: the adults that have gone through the process seem blank and lifeless, and their dæmons seem subdued and incurious. The [evil assholes] continually perfect the process through experimentation, but [our heroine] encounters at least one boy who cannot bear living without his dæmon and dies. When she finds dæmons that have been separated from their people, the creatures are insubstantial and needy: they cluster desperately, ignoring the contact taboo. The separation process also releases a huge burst of energy, which was used by [a raving loon] to create a bridge into [another world].

Basically the reason why humans and dæmons can survive intercision is because it's done much more carefully and ~scientifically~ than simply ripping the two apart. It's like having a limb surgically removed as opposed to having it torn off by farm machinery. But obviously it doesn't always work. Also yes, crazy wacko dæmons.

Yes! I was right with the prophecy! I just love this fic, it kept me up a few nights to read it all, but it's so worth it. I love how you merged both Sherlock and HDM so completely together! Just beautiful.

I made a wallpaper for this beautiful fic and I'm just gleeful that I got the prophecy right xD I hope you like it

you rock \m/ <3

That is just pure AWESOMENESS! Do you mind if I put it up on my master image post?

Somehow I had started to wonder if the prophecy was actually about Moriarty, but the idea that it's about Sherlock *and* John makes a whole lot of sense.

This is brilliant, I'm looking forward to more!

Thanks! I must admit, sometimes it's hard writing S/J (only technically, of course) because so many sentences become littered with male pronouns. But in this case, it was good because it enabled me to hide the real meaning of the prophecy.

I feel pretty proud about the fact that I totally knew the prophecy was about both of them. /fistpump And omg Ragnvald is related to Iorek, the mightiest BAMF of them all! Awesome, nicely done. All the links to HDM canon in this chapter are tickling me (as well as slightly scaring me) to death.

A lot of people pretty much had the prophecy figured out, which makes me very happy :D 'Look, look, people are thinking about my writing in-depth and are figuring this stuff out!'

(Deleted comment)
I'm so pleased people could figure the prophecy out! It's like they're saying 'yes, you have built a strange and foreign world but we can still understand what you're hinting at!'

“We should probably turn off the light,” Raniel whispered.
Sherlock glanced over at his dæmon. Raniel was sitting on top of the bedspread, his forepaws resting on the edge of the laptop while his attention on the sleeping figures on the other side of the bed. Amarisa's head was buried beneath John's arm, and the man's hand was flung over his face, as though subconsciously shielding his eyes.
Sherlock was half-surprised that his first impulse wasn't to ignore Raniel and get back to work. But instead, he rose and turned off the light before returning to the bed by the light of the computer screen." - delicious!
You do not have big words and phrases, one can see that Sherlock loves John, really. True love can immediately find out - if you're ready for another person to change themselves, it's true love.
You're gorgeous! Please, please, the next chapter. (And Semper Fidelis course)

Thanks! And I definitely believe that love is shown through the little things...

they sure are a lovely couple in their on way! =D
love it! \o
great chapter
looking forward for more

I always have next to nothing to say in these. Not because the chapters don't give enough food for thought or anything, because they do, but because I am usually at loss to say anything but more. more. more. more. more. once I am done. :D

If I have to pick one moment that I liked the most it might either be the Mummy/John hug or Do you want to have sex?. :D

This story is one of those I've re-read at least two dozen times now. <3 So gorgeous!

Thanks! And as soon as I was writing a Mummy/John reunion, I knew it had to be amazingly affectionate and surprise everyone!

*happy sigh*

So perfect! And I'm loving the plottiness! Wonderful, wonderful writing!

Only perfect with your help, sweety :D

What a treat! I really love the way you have integrated the two worlds, and the rivalry between the Holmes' brothers are wonderfully caught!

Thank you for sharing this!

Thanks! I doubt Sherlock and Mycroft would ever NOT bicker, you know?
